Screening material: activated carbon
Equipment used: Linear vibrating screen
product description
Activated carbon is a type of carbon that has been specially treated by heating organic materials (such as fruit shells, coal, wood, etc.) under isolated air conditions to reduce non carbon components (this process is called carbonization), and then reacting with gas to corrode the surface and produce a structure with well-developed micropores (this process is called activation). Due to the fact that the activation process is a microscopic process, where a large amount of molecular carbides corrode the surface in a point like manner, numerous small pores are formed on the surface of activated carbon. The diameter of micropores on the surface of activated carbon is mostly between 2-50nm. Even a small amount of activated carbon has a huge surface area, with a surface area of 500-1500m2 per gram of activated carbon. Almost all applications of activated carbon are based on this characteristic of activated carbon.
Problems encountered in production
1. Activated carbon treatment is a deep treatment process, usually only considered when individual water quality indicators of the effluent cannot meet the discharge requirements after other conventional processes have been used to treat the wastewater.
2. Before selecting the activated carbon process, a carbon column test should be conducted on the effluent from the pre-treatment process or a water sample with similar water quality. Different brands and specifications of activated carbon should be screened, and the main design parameters such as water filtration rate, effluent quality, saturation cycle, and short backwash cycle can be obtained through the test.
3. The water entering the activated carbon process should generally be filtered first to prevent surface blockage of the carbon layer due to excessive suspended solids. At the same time, the concentration of organic matter in the influent should not be too high to avoid rapid saturation of activated carbon, so as to ensure a reasonable regeneration cycle and operating costs. When the concentration of CODc in the influent exceeds 50-80mg/L, the use of biological activated carbon technology should generally be considered for treatment.
4. For reclaimed water treatment or treatment processes where the concentration of certain pollutants often changes beyond the standard, a bypass pipe should be installed for the activated carbon treatment unit. When the incoming water from the current process does not exceed the standard within a certain period of time, the activated carbon unit can be stopped in a timely manner, which can save the adsorption capacity of the activated carbon bed and effectively extend the regeneration or replacement cycle.
5. The use of fixed beds should consider designing backup tanks or carbon towers based on the regeneration or replacement cycle of activated carbon. Mobile beds should also consider backup when necessary.
6. Due to the severe electrochemical corrosion caused by the contact between activated carbon and ordinary steel, the design of activated carbon treatment equipment should first consider reinforced concrete structures or materials such as stainless steel and plastic. If ordinary carbon steel is used for production, the inner surface of the device should be lined with epoxy resin, and the thickness of the lining should be greater than 1.5mm.
7. When using powdered activated carbon, fire and explosion prevention should be considered, and the electrical equipment used should also meet explosion-proof requirements.
